Nature's Cradle hill station at Jotiba Hill is a holy place situated 17 km away in the north of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India. It is at an altitude of about 3100 ft above sea level on the hilly Sahyadris surrounded by green mountains and black precipices. The road upto the temple doorway is lined with kiosks, and shops selling offerings.
Jotiba or Dattatreya of Kolhapur
Jotiba temple is one of the12 Jyotirlingas and is also called Wadi-Ratnagiri, and ‘Kedarnath of the South’. It is dedicated to Jotiba or Dattatreya, an incarnation of three primary Gods - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The image in which Jotiba dwells is of soft black stone.
Jotiba was born to Vimalambuja, the wife of sage Pougand. He belonged to the Nath cult and he founded his kingdom on Jotiba Hill. He was born to destroy the demon Ratnasur and he helped Goddess Mahalaxmi in her fight against the demons. And Jotiba’s destruction of Ratnasura gave the place the name of Ratnagiri.
